Do you experience the feeling of Fear regularly? Is it something you feel is regulating your life? Has Fear become a regular Anxiety that is affecting your wellbeing? The problem with Fear, is that when we are in the midst of it, we can find it very difficult to pause long enough to recognise it or hear what the inner small voice is saying. That's a clue that Fear is dominant at the time and that we should take positive action to diffuse the Fear within.
What kind of Fear is it?
For most of us, Fear is about what will or might happen. The remembered past can make us Fear the present or the Future. Especially if past behaviour is an indicator of future behaviour.
Physical Fear
For some, the future can even be more frightening than the present. And the secret Fear is Fear of Death as an outcome. This is what bullies and abusers of any kind or age rely on. Fear as Anxiety can be when we are worried about exams, or performance, job interviews or partaking in social events. It can be anything that puts you under pressure.
Where does Fear sit with you?
Are you living in the remembered past, the imagined future, or actually living in the present?
The challenge is recognise our Anxiety and mindfully soften and surrender into the reality of our feelings or response, and learn to sit with Fear and observe it as separate from ourselves. This process can apply just as much to Grief, for Grief can be mixed up with Fear.
Being an Observer
In working with clients, I have often encouraged them to step outside a strong emotional response and look at the situation as an Observer. An Observer just observes - noticing all parts of a situation. Being an Observer can diffuse the intensity of the Fear in order to make positive actions or decisions, or notice a different point-of-view and welcome lateral thinking.
Being an Observer is like looking at things 'from a distance'. Some of you would know the powerful song that Bette Midler sings, 'From a Distance' which is an important reflective piece.
